English anthem

A subject close to my heart which I briefly posted about a few days ago is supported by Jim White writing in the Telegraph.

And there are a multitude of us out there who agree.

There is a popular argument that 'Jerusalem' would be more appropriate.

What do you reckon?

Jerusalem has the advantage of being liked by both Left and Right. That would be my choice but I fear that multicultural considerations will never permit a hymn that refers to Jesus become the nations anthem.

I'm not so keen on Land of Hope and Glory. Not because I disagree with the sentiment, although most on the left would, but because an English characteristic is understatement. LoHaG is too brash.

I love Jerusalem but think you may be right johnm. Then again id be happy with Land of Hope and Glory even if for some reason it evokes odd childhood memories of my parents watching 'It Aint Half Hot Mum' ("Land of Hope and ...shut uuuuup!!!")

Difficult isn't it? It's hard to suggest a tune that everybody would like.
Three lions is a belter of a modern tune though.
